Fellowship and Residency Training

CENTA offers world class training in head and neck surgery in a unique training style available as a 3-4 month rotation or a 1 year clinical fellowship.  Our mission is to provide hands-on experience in challenging disorders of the head and neck using direct mentorship provided by four very experienced head and neck surgeons so that the trainee will master surgical skills and understand how to manage complex problems of the head and neck.

The fellowship provides the opportunity to participate in over 250 major head and neck cases under the direct guidance of the primary head and neck surgeon.  The fellow will perform about 150 neck dissections, 50 laryngectomies, 20 cranial base surgery, 100 pedicled flaps and 50 microvascular flaps.  He will head the inpatient care team with daily care and direct the care of patients under the guidance of the attending surgeon.  The only required involvement in the clinic is the weekly multi-disciplinary head and neck tumor clinic where patients with new or recurrent tumors are evaluated.  At the conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow should have the skill, competence and confidence in managing the most complex head and neck cases.

The resident participates as primary trainee under the guidance of the attending head and neck surgeon in many of the head and neck surgeries.  He will be the assistant to the fellow or be the primary trainee in the complex head and neck cases.  During the 3-4 months rotation he should master surgical skills and become knowledgeable in the management of many complex head and neck problems.  The only required clinical involvement is the weekly multi-disciplinary head and neck tumor clinic where patients with new or recurrent tumors are evaluated.

Our close relationship with other related subspecialties such as neuro-otology, oral surgery, facial plastic surgery, neurosurgery and oculoplastics provides the trainee additional learning opportunities.  Sleep disorders, sinus and allergy and thyroid and parathyroid disease and pediatric ENT are the non-head and neck surgery areas of sub-specialty expertise within CENTA available to the trainee.
