Intraoperative
Radiotherapy
Radiation for the treatment of
cancer can be given only once in a specific region. If the cancer
recurs or persists, other treatments such as surgery or
chemotherapy must be used. The Head & Neck Surgery Associates
has the largest experience in the world in intraoperative
radiotherapy. If the cancer is removed but there is a concern
that tumor cells persist in the remaining tissue, a single
treatment of radiation is given to the tissue through the open
wound while the patient is still under anesthesia. This is
equivalent to another full course of radiation.
